Joanna is incredibly proud to be hosting an evening with the Art Themen Trio!

For forty years, Themen combined practising orthopaedic surgery with a career in music that has included backing up Joe Cocker on his classic breakthrough hit, 'With a Little Help from My Friends' (which earned him a princely £15.75!)

He also performed with British blues 'godfather', Alexis Corner, and featured on the Graham Bond, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce post-Cream album, Songs for a Tailor. During his time with Korner, Themen  came into contact with George Harrison, Eric Clapton and various Rolling Stones and dabbled in pop sessions, then in 1974 he began an association with pianist Stan Tracey that lasted for twenty-five years and showcased his consistently creative saxophone playing in bands ranging in size from trio to quartet to sextet to full jazz orchestra, including the BBC Big Band.

The ingredients that he tried to create his own musical personality from, and for his reputation as an original saxophone stylist, he owes to listening to Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane

Now in his 80s, Art continues to be so twinkly, so cheeky, so cool - one of the few remaining British legends still at the height of his powers, always wary of the connotations behind his byname “the jazz doctor!”

Joanna Eden presents a 'labour of love' show celebrating the music of her vocal hero Ella Fitzgerald. Joanna is mentor to superstar Sam Smith who last appeared at Dean Street as Joanna's backing singer when he was still a teenager. Joanna launched 'Embraceable Ella' to much acclaim at the London Jazz Festival and has since been touring this heart-warming collection of songs with world class pianist Simon Brown.

Joanna is delighted to be welcoming  Paul Martin, affectionatley known as Paulus to Joanna's Place.

Paulus, aside from being the not-so-easily-pleased judge on the BBC 1 hit talent programme All Together Now, is an all-round showman par excellence, having been an entertainer since the age of seven, so going on for some fourteen years now . . . (he says!)

He has performed in and out of drag to literally tens of people up and down the country and in some venues he was actually asked to.

He is in demand worldwide for crimes against theatre since his performances in Paris, Berlin, Melbourne and New York in the early Noughties, and has graced TV screens as a mentor to pensioners, singing judge, lookalike/weight-loss adjudicator, and a badminton player with no shuttlecock.

Cabaret, Theatre and TV work not being enough, Paulus now tours branches of Dunelmin his thought-provoking and immersive one-man show ‘Can I Get A Refund?’ which one bystander called ‘Incessant’.

His witty repartee and knowing looks will make you laugh and cry In equal measure as he shares his unique work view through music - that of others and his own.

"Paulus is an industry gem and absolute professional. Entertaining and insightful, he brought a new level of expertise and hilarity to our events." Tempest Rose, House of Burlesque

"Paulus is a firm favourite at the Café de Paris, London. Regularly hosting Showtime Cabaret, he controls the room with sharp wit, fantastic vocal ability and presence. Always a consummate professional and a pleasure to work with." Tom Gravett,Café de Paris

In this acclaimed show, singer/pianist Joanna Eden finally owns up to her passion for musical theatre and treads the line between jazz cool and heart-filled storytelling.  Launched at the EFG London Jazz Festival in 2017, Sondheim & Me show traces Sondheim’s work from West Side Story to Into the Woods, seeking to explore the jazzy side of Sondheim without losing the theatrical truth.

Joanna will be joined by accomplished musical theatre actress Leigh McDonald (National Theatre’s Olivier Winning cast of Honk, Mamma Mia world tour as ‘Rosie’) who brings an authentic musical theatre sound to proceedings. Enjoy Joanna’s jazzy take on Sondheim classics like ‘Send in the Clowns’, ‘Being Alive’, ‘Giants in the Sky’ and ‘The Miller’s Son’ whilst Leigh gives her mind-blowing rendition of ‘Not Getting Married’ from Company.  With beautiful duets on ‘Pretty Women’ and ‘The Ladies Who Lunch’ and an a cappella rendition of ‘Somewhere’, Eden gives Sondheim’s works a fresh new approach.

Joanna and Leigh will be joined by the world class George Double Trio

The Stables will be opening its doors from 11am, so before each concert you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a hot bacon roll, along with a full bar and snack bar service – the Sunday papers will be available too!
